Legal English Overview
Washington University School of Law’s online course is for legal professionals who want to build proficiency and improve their legal English skills. The course will also prepare students to be successful in an online or residential LL.M. program.
This course offers students the opportunity to develop critical skills in:
- Analyzing and briefing court cases
- Legal note taking and outlining
- Engaging in dialogue using the Socratic method — the preferred method used at law schools in the U.S.
- Thinking and communicating like an American lawyer
- Communicating with other non-native English speakers
Taught by experienced legal English professors in a state-of-the-art video conferencing format, this four-week course helps students improve their communication skills, learn how to navigate law school in the U.S. and interact more comfortably with American lawyers in international legal and business environments.
Legal English is available as a stand-alone course for non-degree-seeking individuals or as a supplementary and primer course for @WashULaw students seeking their LL.M. degree. Students hoping to be admitted to the @WashULaw LL.M. program are encouraged to apply, as well are those admitted to other LL.M. programs who desire to improve their legal English skills.
The cost of the Legal English course is $400.
The next cohort begins the week of December 1. The 4-week course meets weekly for 80 minutes, and there are two session times to choose from: Wednesdays at 7 a.m. EST or Saturdays at 10 a.m. EST.
